Art Book Show

Offset

Centre des Livres d’Artistes (CDLA)

Jan. 12th – Apr. 8th 2023

The “Offset” exhibition offers a path through the works collected at the CDLA. Its title refers to a printing technique widely used for publication, and marks a willingness to break away from the established order – to present off-centre points of view. To be outside the “set”.

“Offset” is composed of 4 video projections and two sound broadcasting points, each presenting a unique path between works that were designed specifically for dissemination and sharing: tracts, magazines, books, scores, postcards, invitations, posters, documents, speeches, fictions, radio programmes, LPs, tapes, wav, aiff, mp3, etc.

Publishing is an artistic laboratory for experimentation and exchange with the public, and as such it provides an alternative space to the limitations of commercial art. This practice, sometimes collaborative, has resulted in the creation of independent and original media.

The aim of the exhibition is to explore the potential of publishing at its most commonplace, both as a means and a context, where observations, forms and ideas can circulate. It is composed of four parts: “Conditions & predictions”, “Original & common”, “Ramdam & tralala”, “Crossings & parallels”

“Offset” shows projects ranging from the already historicised period of the 1960s and 1970s, to recent works by new generation artists. The exhibition highlights the important place occupied by publishing in artistic practice. Among other things it emphasises the opportunities given by the transition from analog to digital, but also the resistance to the standardisation of content conditioned and formatted by social networks.

About a thousand works by more than one hundred artists are presented in the form of sound broadcasting and projected video reproductions, accompanied by their caption: author, title, year of creation. No physical object – print, card, vinyl, showcase, picture rail, desk, pin, staple, is shown.
