Publisher Note

This booklet is connected to the artist's project “This kitchen is for dancing”. During the build-up of a 1:1 fictional kitchen model, the floor was covered with paper, eventually recording all actions in this temporary space: how people moved, rested, hesitated, dreamed, and danced. These captured movement patterns formed the blueprint for a new work: a ceramic floor composition for this very same kitchen.

To develop this project further, Zwarts sought examples of translations from paper to ceramics. She encountered the work of local artist Júlio Resende during a trip to Porto, who was known for his drawings-turned-to-ceramics. In the course of 2025, she studied his work more closely, hoping to find a suitable way to translate the given blueprint into a ceramic form herself.

Her research resulted in multiple layers of method, material, documentation, experimentation, and this booklet that was given the name “A place of drawing”. It works as a theoretical and contextual counterpart and combines Zwarts's intent to showcase what happens “behind the scenes” with the act of selfpublishing.
