Work Description
The publication is a rich volume that aims to discuss existential issues on the relationship between Body and Mind, both in historical and contemporary perspectives, using the historical room from the 16th century and Vinje`s installation (2013) as a platform. Texts by authors Aina Villanger, Hanne Ørstavik explores the anatomical theatre as a site of investigation of the self, whereas in other essays the enduring human interest in the body and mind relation are discussed in in titles such as “Al lin the Brain? Conteplative Life and the Anatomical Theatre of the Mind” (Martijn van Beek) and Mind-Body Technology: ‘Nosce te Ipsum’ and a Theory of Prosthetic ‘Trialism’ (Tom Slevin). The theme is vividly explored through visual materials: photography and drawings by Petrine Vinje, edited as a continuing exploration of her artwork from 2018: a full scale model of the anatomical theatre built in 1662–63 for Uppsala University, was erected as a multifaceted art project under the Norwegian Sculpture Biennale 2013. The Anatomical Theatre was present in the Vigeland Park in Oslo for three months. The installation referred to the enduring human interest in the body and mind relation and the artwork was operative as a place of research and contemplation through an associated programme exploring mind / body theories and practices. With Anatomical Theatre as a platform, we can explore a possible common ground for understanding the physical, mental and spiritual experience. With: Martijn van Beek, Jens Erland Braarvig, Liv Kristin Holmberg, Bruno Laeng, Lars J. Langøien, Tom Slevin, Espen Stueland, Aina Villanger, Hanne Ørstavik
