Publisher Note
For over ten years, Catugier has been creating analogies between music and architecture, through video, photography, installation and performance. The publication is Catugier’s first-ever monograph, a culmination of works collated from her residencies in Germany, Czech Republic, Japan, Iran, Poland, Russia, and Egypt. The publication is complemented by an ebook containing Catugier’s own videos, performances and work-in-progress; as well as her collaboration with the musicians and essayists.
Architecture is Frozen Music presents Catugier’s work on Indigo-printed pages, hand-bounded from multiple directions. The publication is intended to be viewed in various orientations, with endless combinations possible by overlapping the pages. The book’s structure is built according to ‘Open Form’ theory by the Polish Modernist Architect Oksar Hansen. Without hierarchies to forms, the readers are invited to create their own path when navigating the architectural compositions of the book. The freely formed orders mirror the freedom of inhabiting and moving within a space, envisioned by the Modernist architectural designs.
Architecture is Frozen Music was presented at Catugier’s solo exhibition in einBuch.haus in March 2022. Resonating with our ethos of showcasing a book as an exhibition, each copy of the second edition of Architecture is Frozen Music is presented with unique covers, fragment cut in blueback paper prints displayed at her previous exhibitions. The materiality of the cover connects the interaction with a book object to the latent memories of the exhibitions.
