Publisher Note

The German artist Sinje Dillenkofer shows pictures with interior views of historical containers that are used to store jewelry, silverware, technical instruments, documents or weapons. They come from private and public collections in Innsbruck and the surrounding area. Dillenkofer uses the historical container as a metaphor. With her photos, the artist questions cultural values, power relations of different epochs and the concept of beauty.
People like to look for suitable storage locations for objects that are valuable or important to them. Precious pieces of jewelry are put in finely furnished boxes, sensitive instruments are kept in protective cases. When things are stored in a container for a long time, they often leave traces, for example through the imprint of their shape, through wear and tear or changes in the color of the inner fabric covering.

The pictures show the inside of caskets, cases and suitcases in which coins, cutlery, jewelry, liturgical objects or technical instruments are kept. Dillenkofer uses the historical container as a metaphor, his architectural space as image space. The photos can be read as an index that provides information about the social function and significance of the housing.

For her CASES series, Dillenkofer has researched private and public collections in Innsbruck, Hall and Wattens - such as the Tyrolean state museums, Ambras Castle, the city archive / city museum, the Tyrolean state archive and the Saluteum medical history collection - for containers with cultural and historical significance . In her photos, Dillenkofer lets the empty housings appear oversized, large or small, and experiments with color and sharpness. Dillenkofer uses the metaphorical level of her pictures to impressively question cultural values, power relations of different epochs and the concept of beauty.
