In her videos, canadian artist Julie Favreau presents an utopia influenced by cyborgs and extended realities—a realm where new forms of intimacy reign. The artist links theoretical approaches from feminism with a critique of surveillance capitalism. According to this critique, as explained by Harvard economist Shoshana Zuboff: “The age of surveillance capitalism originates in an even more startling and audacious mental invention,
as surveillance capitalism declares private human experience as free raw material for translation into production and sales.’ At the same time, Favreau’s experiences with choreographies also feeds into her work: Favreau’s performance, video, and installation works emerge out of her long-running engagement with contemporary dance, especially choreographers like Meg Stuart, Cecilia Bengolea, Trajal Harrell.
