In 1938, Schuh set sail for Indonesia, visiting Bali, Java and Sumatra. Upon his return, he published his very successful book "Inseln der Götter", consisting of photography, poems and texts, in which he portrayed the Balinese people.
It is a mixture of reportage and self-reflection, with a poetic quality that, though individual images may be read either way, Schuh sometimes valued over documentary authenticity:
“Everyone just depicts what he sees, and everyone just sees what corresponds to his being.”
