News Cuts brings together twenty-two images selected from Olaf Nicolai’s personal archive of newspaper clippings. Each image is accompanied by a collage of quotes compiled from different kinds of sources, evoking new framings of the given image through this index and its composition of variant historical, socio-political as well as poetic connotations. A first version of News Cuts was published on the occasion of the exhibition There Is No Place Before Arrival at Kunsthalle Wien (July 13 – October 7 2018) curated by Luca Lo Pinto, in which these 22 images were translated into enlarged chalk floor paintings, which the visitors were able to walk over and around. Over the course of the exhibition, the installation not only gradually changed and slowly vanished, but was also activated by writers, dancers, choreographers, musicians, artists and performers invited to respond to this painted „plateau” and its individual images, especially referring to the collages of texts given by the index.
