Publisher Note
When Pier Paolo Pasolini was filming ‘The Gospel According to Matthew’ in the Sassi of Matera in 1963, Domenico Notarangelo was there by his side, busy taking thousands of images of farmers with mules, common women in black dresses and scarves, and kids engaged in soccer games under the burning summer sun.
Domenico Notarangelo’s shot the images published in this book on the set of the Pasolini’s film. Notarangelo's testimony, rich in details that illuminate the film from within, captured the very moment of its production.
Pasolini engaged Notarangelo in a collaborative relationship, asking him to help him find, among the inhabitants of Matera, about fifty people with faces suitable for playing the scribes and Pharisees of the Gospel.
Updated and reprinted on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Pier Paolo Pasolini. The book also contains a series of shots by Angelo Novi, Pasolini's set photographer, made available by the Cineteca di Bologna.
