Six events held at different places in Berlin in 2010 roused Perform a Lecture, which sheds light on a peculiar subgenre of Performance – the Lecture Performance. This genre grew in relevance in the late noughties, and is central in the work of many artists. “The aim of Perform a Lecture was to interrogate the timeliness of the format and to engage with the politics of the medium. The Lecture Performance occupies an in-between zone, which inevitably – or explicitly – thematizes the site of artistic experience, an alternative access to and dealing with knowledge through art, as well as the exceptional relation between artist and audience. Therefore, we believe that the Lecture Performance is a form which allows us to analyze shifts in the setup of the artistic context and its mechanisms – including the conception of the author and creativity, the institution and its spaces, and the fragile net of relations between the different protagonists in the arts.” (Ellen Blumenstein and Fiona Geuss)

„Die Publikation Perform a Lecture! konzentriert sich auf ein Format, das so ungewöhnlich wie spannend ist: den Vortrag als Kunstform. Die Kuratorinen von The Office haben sechs internationale Künstler eingeladen, sogenannte “Lecture Performances” zu erarbeiten. Das Format hatten Künstler wie Robert Morris und Dan Graham in den sechziger Jahren entwickelt. Mittlerweile bedienen Lecture Performances sowohl formal als auch inhaltlich eine beachtliche Bandbreite, wie die bisherigen Veranstaltungen von Perform a Lecture! demonstrieren. Dan Graham etwa führte das Publikum durch die Hufeisensiedlung Bruno Tauts. Ellie Ga hielt einen penibel choreografierten wissenschaftlichen Vortrag über ihre Erfahrungen als Künstlerin an Bord des Forschungsschiffs Tara. Olivia Plender und Romeo Gongora bezogen das Publikum in ein Rollenspiel zum Thema Machtstrukturen in Familien ein." (aus: Die Zeit, Dezember 2010) Die Lecture Performance nimmt eine Zwischenzone ein, die unweigerlich den Ort der künstlerischen Erfahrung thematisiert, einen alternativen Zugang zu und den Umgang mit Wissen durch Kunst sowie die außergewöhnliche Beziehung zwischen Künstler und Publikum.
