About the Book
In “Schatten–Ombre” Wolfgang Gäfgen juxtaposes silhouettes from the years 1995–1998 with pictorial answers from the year 2019 in the form of a booklet. In the play of shadows, a narrative unfolds that traces the essence of the two “least colorful” colors—black and white. Hand-signed artist edition, 200 pieces.
About the Artist
Wolfgang Gäfgen born 1936 in Hamburg, is a German artist who works in the visual media of large-format hand drawing, wood printing, paper cutting and photography. Wolfgang Gäfgen first studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg with Theo Garve and Kurt Kranz and continued his studies at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart, where his tea- chers Karl Rössing and Walter Brudi were particularly committed to contemporary artistic original graphics, typography and book art. After graduation, Gäfgen moved to Paris, where he was able to gain important experience in Johnny Friedlaender‘s studio. Gäfgen‘s works have been shown in numerous international solo and group exhibitions and are represented in many German and French museums, public and private collections. In 1977 he took part in documenta 6 with a block of drawings.
Wolfgang Gäfgen is regarded as one of the outstanding representatives of drawing and the new woodblock printing of the 20th and 21st centuries in both the German-speaking and French-spe- aking regions and, as a long-standing professor of free graphic art and painting at the Stuttgart Art Academy, he left his mark on generations of art students. He lives and works in Stuttgart, where his studio is located in Bad Cannstatt.
