Publisher Note
Since 2016, Klaus Petrus has been documenting escape routes across the Balkans to EU countries and Switzerland. During these journeys, he lived with migrants in barracks and ruins, accompanied families, crossed borders with refugees, and documented the violence of border police – and despite everything, experienced a great deal of humanity, everyday life, and normality.
This long-term project Spuren der Flucht (Traces of Escape) is now documented in this publication, with 145 black-and-white images and a cover that unfolds to form a map, brimming with testimonies, events, and facts.
Klaus Petrus's work on migration was honored with a Swiss Press Photo Award in 2022.
