Notes Artist Oscar Guermouche explores language as a bearer of identity. His work focuses on connections between body and text, using questions of biography, self-image and character as a starting point.
He is particularly interested in male identities and male characters, most often anti-heroes, and the narratives that create them. This includes issues such as childhood, sexuality, paternity, home, threats, readiness. At the same time, as a non-white person with a non-European background living in Sweden, race, ethnicity and nationhood have inevitably also become key components in several of his works.
His practice is based on copying, displacing and compiling existing texts. Concurrently, the works include a number of different techniques, such as painting, drawing, video, performance, installation and objects.

Oscar Guermouche is born in 1977 in Stockholm, and living on Öland, Sweden. He obtained his master’s degree (MFA) in 2009 from the Department of Fine Art at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.
His work has been exhibited at Magasin III Museum of Contemporary Art in Stockholm, ICIA in Gothenburg, the National Centre for Contemporary Art in Moscow, Kunsthalle Rostock, and Sleepwalker Projects in Toronto, amongst others. He is represented in several art collections, such as those of the Public Art Agency Sweden, the City of Stockholm and the City of Gothenburg. Furthermore, his work has been published in, for example, Texst (Konstfack), Il Corpo Solitario (Rubbettino Editore), and by Flamme Forlag. He has also written several essays and articles, published by Paletten Art Journal, the magazines Verk and Geist, the Swedish Association for Art, and the Turku Biennial, amongst others.
Since 2016, he is engaged in a collaboration with graphic designer Sandra Praun, focusing on book design and production. Their clients include Kerber Verlag, Roy Andersson / Studio24, White Arkitekter, Bonniers Konsthall, and Art and Theory Publishing. In 2020 they launched the publishing house Praun & Guermouche.
