Publisher Note

The book Afrotopia was published on the occasion of the 11th edition of the Rencontres de Bamako, held from December 2017 to January 2018.

The Bamako Encounters, organized since 1994, co-produced by the Ministry of Culture of Mali and the French Institute with the support of the Agrique et Caraïbes program in creation, are the first and largest event devoted to photography and video in Africa.

The starting point of this biennale is a reflection on the notion of Afrotopia, formulated by Felwine Sarr in his eponymous essay, on the way in which Africa must reposition itself in the world based on its own specificities. The 11th edition of the Bamako Encounters aimed to present in what and how Africa contributes to the current world, by involving artists as witnesses of this radical change and this through social, political, historical and economic themes.

Some featured artists: Neil Beloufa; Black Athena Collective; Julien Creuzet; Mounir Fatmi; Musa Nxumalo; Athi-Patra Ruga; Bogosi Sekhukhuni.
