Publisher Note
30 years ago, historical events fundamentally changed the world — the end of the Cold War heralded the democratization of the Eastern European states. Also in Albania, which was the last country in Europe to liberate itself after almost 50 years of dictatorship.
The photographer Hans Peter Jost documents the development of Albania from the chaotic, turbulent and painful days of the 1990s to the present day of predatory capitalism.
The photographs are accompanied by two essayistic discussions. The historian and Balkan scholar Nathalie Clayer provides a historical overview, while the Albanian journalist and writer Fatos Lubonja contributes a sensitive inventory of his country.
