Publisher Note
Daniel Naudé's Animal Farm brings together 50 photographs taken between 2007 and 2011. In an introductory essay to the book, Daniel Naudé describes his initial encounter with an Africanis dog, in the desert plans of the Karoo, and the many road trips that followed in his photographic pursuit of these and other animals, their place in the South African landscape and their relationship to the humans that populate it.
Daniel Naudé’s depiction of South Africa’s animals and rural landscape raises provocative questions about our relationships with the creatures that share our land. The penetrating stare of a feral Africanis dog; the regal dignity of enormous horned cattle; farmers bottle-feeding a lamb, clutching a young donkey, or stolidly leading their goats to pasture — all are photographed against the backdrop of South Africa’s rolling hills, grasslands, and seashore. As Naudé’s muted colors contrast with the animals’ stark silhouettes, viewers are compelled to share his intrepid curiosity about the nature of human dominion
Daniel Naudé (1984) is a South African photographer. He graduated with a BA Visual Arts Honours degree from the University of Stellenbosch. Daniel Naudé lives in Cape Town.
