Publisher Note

Berlin 1945 - 2000 examines as a photographic motif how German and international photographers saw Berlin between the immediate post-war period and the end of the 20th century. The art historian and curator Candice M. Hamelin selected exemplary works by over twenty photographers. The exhibition catalog - which is being published to accompany a large exhibition in the Reinbeckhallen, Berlin - begins with black and white photos of Berlin in ruins and ends with images of urban development projects from the post-reunification period, often in color and with exposure times of up to several years. Between these two sections there are recordings that correspond to the genres of street, architecture, portrait and subjective, belong to conceptual and experimental photography. In dialogue with one another, the images in this book and the exhibition illustrate the tremendous social, political, and cultural changes that the city has undergone, as well as the diverse photographic practices and trends that have developed in Berlin over the course of fifty-five years.
