Publisher Note
FORTYSEVEN began as a record of the last bottle ovens and kilns of Stoke-on-Trent.
What started as a defined number has shifted… quietly… inevitably… into something wider.
This new zine, Beyond FortySeven, continues that documentation. Stoke remains at its core, but the work now reaches further: across the UK, tracing what still stands, what has collapsed, and what remains only as a trace in the ground.
Each structure carries equal weight. Each one speaks to an industry that shaped lives, landscapes, and memory.
This is not an ending. This is continuation.
A zine to bridge a longer process of looking, recording, and remembering. The uncertainty of FortySeven has given way to a national enquiry, searching for what exists and what remains of an industry that shaped lives, landscapes, and memory.
The number is fragile. The journey continues.
