Publisher Note

Bilder fragen - "images ask questions" is a play on words that derives from the image question of the Reformation period, which in the exhibition represents a springboard for the current situation and discussion of the role, function and extraordinary significance of the artistic image today.
"images ask questions" does not attempt to make a recourse to the history of religion, but rather represents a strong aesthetic postulate for the effectiveness and existential significance, but also for the latent threat to artistic images today. Every artistic image is also implicitly questioned by the person who looks at it, just as strong artistic images always contain existential questions of their own, and are themselves such questions: about the preservation and disappearance of things, about transformation, development and of course also about the destructive threat of all forms of unfreedom.

Despite all attempts at media instrumentalization, it is still and only the artistic image that acts as a means of communication that transcends cultures and languages and can connect emotionally and intellectually across borders. "bilder fragen" presents selected contributions from international contemporary artists as autonomous artistic positions that, in dialogue with one another, create an impressive overall picture.
