In the mid-1970s, an unusual public-private housing project was built in Vienna – 3,200 apartments in three large blocks represented affordable luxury in concrete and the utopian idea that life in genuine communities with fresh air, water, and greenery is possible for everyone. Alterlaa is one of the rare examples where modernism has realized its highest aspirations – a true housing machine with almost 100% satisfied residents for over four decades. In her long-term project, You, My Concrete Utopia, Zara Pfeifer (born 1984) captured the human side of this for the first time in an extensive photographic series.
