Publisher Note
I volti della povertà in carcere (the features of poverty in prison) portrays men and women who live the experience of the San Vittore prison (Milan – Italy) as convicts or as operators.
The black and white photographs of Matteo Pernaselci - representing the environment, objects, places as well as portraits – are integrated with texts and in-depth interviews.
"Visiting this prison was a painful experience. I wasn't ready to cross the threshold and experience the limits of freedom and the perception of the incarcerated body through the inmates. Then, after a year of work and meetings, you realize that you've done what you could, allowing the prisoners to sew together the pieces of their memories of life stories."
- Rossana Ruggiero
“Entering a prison was a powerful experience, especially when you're very young.
I took the images for this book when I was 22 and it was my first experience of reporting in a place so full of stories. We went to the root, trying to understand the meaning of what had happened in the lives of the people we met. Looking someone in the eye and offering them your hand could change their life forever."
