Publisher Note
Digitization means that the physical book is becoming increasingly less important. However, as a deliberately used medium, it fulfills both aesthetic and conceptual functions through its transformative power. It allows the viewer a unique experience by opening up an additional dimension of perception through its tactile nature. This project explores the potential of materiality and printing techniques to give the book expressive power through its formal particularities. The book on the subject of sans-papiers is designed entirely in black. It contains 100 portraits of sans-papiers, which were generated using artificial intelligence (AI) to preserve the anonymity of the individuals. The portraits, printed in black ink on black paper, appear almost invisible and refer to the hidden life in the dark and the problem of undeclared work. The large format and volume symbolize the large number of sans-papiers living in Switzerland. By using unconventional printing methods and different paper thicknesses, this work invites us to appreciate the physical book as a holistic experience.
