Publisher Note

This comprehensive photobook Leben auf Zeit. Alltag im Gefängnis (Temporary life. Everyday life in prison) is published on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of one of the oldest correctional facilities in Germany - the JVA Münster.
The images of Ansgar Dlugos bear witness to an intensive examination of life behind the walls of this listed building.

Built between 1848 and 1853 according to the plans of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and Carl-Friedrich Busse, the external appearance of the Münster JVA still embodies the guiding principles that underpinned the penal system in the middle of the 19th century. Prisons functioned as dark and frightening places of isolation and silence. An average of 510 people currently live here temporarily. What inner life is hidden in this historic building today?
Ansgar Dlugos approaches this question through the medium of photography. His imagery always remains subtle, far from being staged - he carefully focuses in particular on the everyday lives of the people imprisoned here, whom he accompanied for months. These photographs are accompanied by images that focus on the specific architecture of the building.
Small text contributions provide information about individual areas of life and work in this “city within the city” and allow a realistic insight into the penal system.
