Publisher Note
The archipelago of Svalbard, the magical land of the great north, in the Arctic Sea, is a place of contrasts: the polar night and the midnight sun, the millenary glaciers and passing travellers, the polar bear and fragile flowers that miraculously they manage to grow in the northern desert.
The 5 images in this book were taken during days without sun, when landscapes appeared as black and white. To accompany them, the photographer chose some texts on Svalbard seen from a female perspective. For centuries, Svalbard has been dominated by male figures: whalers, hunters, miners. Women passing through were rare until the 1970s, when Longyearbyen too was transformed into a city in which the settlement of households took on a prevalent character. Despite being few, these women have left indelible traces through the stories of their adventures in this unreal place.
