Publisher Note
In the past years, the photographer Maria Haas has focused primarily on an examination of matriarchal societies. In the photo book “ Matriarchs” she has captured the beauty and vibrancy of very different matriarchs. She takes viewers along on a journey to cultures in which women have a special status. By approaching them with great care and tranquility, she has succeeded in documenting the entire living environment and fascination of these foreign societies.
This photobook includes her experiences and pictures of the three largest matriarchal societies—the Minangkabau in Indonesia, the Khasi in India and the Mosuo in China.
