Publisher Note

This book is an aerial photography journey through the landscapes of Arctic Norway: the Lofoten, Jan Mayen and Svalbard.

Lofoten is an archipelago with a distinctive scenery with dramatic mountains and peaks, open sea and sheltered bays, beaches and untouched lands. There are two towns. The archipelago experiences one of the world's largest elevated temperature anomalies relative to its high latitude.

Jan Mayen is a Norvegian volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean with no permanent population. It is 55 km long (southwest-northeast) and 373 km2 in area, partly covered by glaciers around the Beerenberg volcano.

Svalbard previously known as Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen, is a Norvegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean. It lies about midway between the northern coast of Norway and the North Pole. Whalers who sailed far north in the 17th and 18th centuries used the islands as a base; subsequently the archipelago was abandoned. Coal mining started at the beginning of the 20th century, and several permanent communities such as Pyramiden or Barentsburg were established. The Svalbard Treaty of 1920 recognizes Norwegian sovereignty. The Svalbard Treaty established Svalbard as a free economic zone and a demilitarized zone. The Norwegian Store Norske and the Russian Arktikugol remain the only mining companies in place. Research and tourism have become important supplementary industries, with the university Centre in Svalbard and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault playing critical roles in the local economy.

The focus of Rolf Stange is clearly on the images from remote corners of the north: Jan Mayen and Spitsbergen. There are no detailed texts with regional information, nothing should distract from the visual photo reading journey. The images speak for themselves by showing the fantastic, aesthetic and impressive structures of the Arctic landscapes from a bird's eye view, be it lava fields, volcanic craters and rugged coastlines on Jan Mayen or rugged glaciers and rocky or curved shores on Spitsbergen
