Publisher Note
“O Desengano” is be the first reference in a new collection of Alauda Negra publications with a format strictly linked to the photobook. In this publication by Julián Barón (Castelló,1978) recovered a photographic series taken on the coast of Galicia during the Prestige oil tanker disaster in 2002, twenty years ago. These images invokes the forces and conditions in which Julián Barón’s photographic discourse has been developing and that take his own language to an unprecedented space of formalization, beyond memory, as a particular historical subject; and of nature itself, as a set of beliefs and conventions in which to interpret the real. In the first days of November 2002, the oil tanker Prestige sank after suffering a leak some 250 kilometers from the Costa da Morte, causing one of the biggest environmental disasters in the history of Europe, an event that had an enormous political, economic, cultural and social impact. The thousands of volunteers and the pressure of the Nunca Máis movement minimized the damage caused by the spill on some coasts whose resources were and continue to be vital for the population of the area.
