Publisher Note
Ritratti in Carcere (Portraits in Prison) by Margherita Lazzati includes 25 portraits of inmates, mostly with long-term sentences or “never-ending sentences” and five volunteers, all taken between 2016 and 2017. The photographs were shot in the maximum security prison of Milan-Opera (Italy) with the authorization of the Italian Ministry of Justice, the Supervisory Magistrate (and in full agreement with the director at the time, Giacinto Siciliano). For this project Margherita Lazzati attended the Institute's Creative Writing Laboratory every Saturday for more than five years and, with the consent of the inmates, created a real gallery of portraits, week after week, month after month.
