Publisher Note
Sabian Baumann is one of the important positions in Zurich and has developed an impressive body of work over the last 20 years. This volume is the first comprehensive monographic publication to present and acknowledge hes work.
The book is being published on the occasion of the exhibition “Es” (It) at Kunsthaus Langenthal and brings together extensive groups of drawings as well as illustrations of objects and installations. It leads from the current works exhibited in Langenthal back to Sabian Baumann’s early works and exhibitions, associating thematically.
In addition to numerous illustrations, four text contributions offer the opportunity for a more in-depth study of the work: Yvonne Volkart provides an overview of hes entire oeuvre and shows how Sabian Baumann’s allegorical practice establishes an aesthetic of breaks and paradoxes. Fanny Fetzer and Elisabeth Lebovici each take a single installation or a single group of works as a starting point for their reflections. Andrea Thal describes the collaborative projects, films, actions and thematic events in the context of queer and prosex feminism that have occupied Sabian Baumann over the past few years.
In all of his works, Sabian Baumann tries to present normality as a state of emergency and reminds us that social structures are negotiable.
