The people on whom Sebastian Mölleken directs his photographic eye mostly live under special conditions, in special places. The photographer is interested in the deep connection that exists between people and the landscape. Mölleke's open-cast mine shots shift the perception of time and size and show: The landscape shapes the people who live in it - at the same time, people shape the landscape.
Just showing the old world sacrificed for open-cast mining would have been too easy for Mölleken. His photographs also show the places that were created as alternative quarters for humans and animals.
