Publisher Note

There are two faces to every crisis: dissolution and reconstruction. 2020 has been marked by a seemingly endless onslaught of devastation rocking us on a global level. Beginning with the Australian bushfires that ravaged natural and built environments alike until the end of January, and followed by, but not limited to, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown, the continued assault on Black lives in America which erupted into shockwaves of anger and grief worldwide, increasingly entrenched political divides, ongoing internal and international displacement which reached record highs in the last year, disaster has highlighted the economic inequity magnified by capitalist failings in light of a global public health emergency. This is by no means an exhaustive list of this year's fiascos. Momentarily ignored, yet ongoing, is global warming, which continues to upend life in all its forms and to displace vulnerable human and non-human populations. It is undeniable that a breaking point has arrived, spanning across social, political, ecological and environmental levels, each ruptured model calling for reform. Still, a spark of hope amidst the turmoil remains: our human capacity to rally together, share our resources, and provide solidarity when it is urgently needed. It has been heartening to see the numerous efforts quickly and effectively mobilizing mutual aid in the face of hardship.
