Under the title “The Tenderness of Wolves”, Thomas Galler presents with this publication a selection of forty drawings from the work group of “Prison Drawings”, which were created between 2006 and 2017.
“Prison Drawings” comprises both a conceptual, graphic work and a digital collection of some thousand drawings that the artist has acquired from the Internet over the past ten years. All the drawings in this collection have in common that they were produced by prisoners in the course of their imprisonment or custody. A major part originates from American prisons and represents drawings from the middle of the last century to the present. A market for “Murder Memorabilia”, also known as “Murderabilia”, which has established itself with the advent of the Internet and offers not only drawings but also letters, hair, clothing and other items of daily use, thus making this collection possible in the first place, testifies to a cult for materials from the hands of perpetrators.
The collection of “Prison Drawings” serves Thomas Galler as a fundus from which he determines a selection of artworks and pictorial typologies according to various criteria and transforms them into his own drawings. To date, the work of Prison Drawings comprises around two hundred drawings and is considered a work in progress.
Appropriation runs like a red thread through the collection and the drawings, and this in a parrallel manner that refers to Galler’s artistic strategy on the one hand and is reflected in the motifs of the master drawings on the other. Film, comics, fantasy, literature, pornography and also the classical genres of art such as landscape, still life, nudes and portraits have an essential influence on the production of images and represent a discourse with the artifacts of mass culture among contemporary as well as historical exponents from the 1960s and 1970s. Other positions, on the other hand, stand in an Art Brut context or an Outsider Art tradition and develop a crude, poetic visual language from the circumstance of isolation.
With “The Tenderness of Wolves” Thomas Galler poses a series of questions that deal with originality and existence of an artistic work in and of itself. In the context of the collection and the resulting work, one could also speak of the double or parallel existence of a drawing, which materializes again in a different context, thus bringing the reproducibility, the relationship between original and copy and the associated value into a conflictual relationship.
