A mail art project by Hans Braumüller with 177 participating artists from 34 countries

For over 30 years, Hamburg-based artist Hans Braumüller has been part of the visual poetry and mail art scene. Many prominent mail artists from around the world regularly participate in his projects. This was no different this time. Under the title "Artist Matter: Think global – Act Local," Hans Braumüller called on artists to participate in the project. 177 artists sent him hundreds of submissions by mail.

This resulted in the Artist Matter Zine, a printed magazine with an exclusive circulation of 400 copies. The magazine was produced in two-color risograph print at Nachladen in St. Pauli, Hamburg. It contains at least one work from each participating artist, along with English texts exploring the concept of mail art and its development from the 1980s to the present day in the age of social media. The visual poets and mail artists sent or emailed collages, works made with special stamps, texts embedded in images, or printed pieces. The diversity of the submitted works is impressive. All contributions can be viewed on the website artistmatter.crosses.net . With Artist Matter, Hans Braumüller carries on the legacy of Latin American mail artists, who have always seen themselves as giving people a voice outside of the mass media – with means that made art possible for everyone.
