Publisher Note
For his “Utopia” project, Sebastian Wells traveled to seven countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, where he visited a total of 24 refugee camps: Temporary arrangements as a result of global development policy that became part of everyday life, built according to the same patterns of order, hopeless and strictly regulated. They often exist for years or decades, develop a momentum of their own, and yet they are neither a place nor a city nor part of a map. Its residents are crisis-trained masters of adaptation.
The refugee is a category of human being that has become a thing; the refugee camp is the political stage on which he has to come to terms.
