Wales has two coalfields, the South Wales Coalfields extending nearly 90 miles, from St. Bride's Bay in the west to Ponypool in the east, and the North Wales Coalfield, extending from the Point of Ayr in Flintshire south - eastwards to Hawarden and Broughton, near Chester, and then southwards to a few miles below Oswestry, a total of 45 miles.
