Publisher Note
Atlas of the New World is a collaboration between two photographers and CNR climatologist Giulio Betti, who created projections based on the temperature rise observed in recent years.
Giulia Piermartiri and Edoardo Delille merge images of present-day landscapes with projections of climate-altered futures, creating surreal yet urgent images. From the rising seas of the Maldives to the melting glaciers of Mont Blanc, their work documents the profound transformations reshaping our planet.
Atlas of the New World is divided in 6 chapters:
Maldives, the first to disappear when the sea level rises (by 2100 the sea level is expected to rise + 50cm, meaning a land loss of 80 %)
California (by 2100 megadroughts will increase, as well as fires)
Mont Blanc (by 2100 90 % of the glaciers will be lost)
Mozambique (by 2100 a 50 % reduction of annual rainfall is predicted, with a consequent intensification of the desertification processes)
China (by 2100 an increase of both extreme rain events and tropical cyclones is expected)
Russia (by 2100 a 200 % increase in wildfires and dramatic shrinking of permafrost is expected) .
"With Edoardo, we usually work on current affairs projects, telling these kinds of stories. But in 2019, when we decided to begin this work on the topic of climate change, we faced the challenge of trying to present the viewer, who is often drowsy with the images they receive every day in the media, with an even stronger image: the image of the future that awaits them, in the short term rather than the long term. So we tried to imagine how we could narrate these scenarios and we decided to use this particular technique of projecting the image of what will be, a sort of flash from the future, onto real life, which we then photographed around the world."
