Odessa, the port city in southern Ukraine, is known as the pearl of the Black Sea. Ukraine is one of the countries that has been hardest hit by the collapse of the Soviet Union. One symptom of the collapse is the AIDS epidemic. According to estimates by the World Health Organization, 160,000 people are infected with the HIV virus in Odessa. Ukraine recently held the sad European record for new infections and is also one of the countries in the world where AIDS is spreading the fastest.
Andrea Diefenbach (* 1974 in Wiesbaden) accompanied individual HIV-positive women and men in Odessa in spring 2006 and at the same time documented the worrying AIDS epidemic in the Ukrainian metropolis in her quiet, emphatic photo series, which is still rarely seen by the Western public is perceived.
