Publisher Note

For this publication German Susanne M. Winterling, who has worked in recent years as a professor at Oslo National Academy of the Arts, has photographed a small group of people based in Paris, with the older intellectual Alain Siboni as a rallying point. Across genders, gene¬rations, nationalities and class, Winterling wishes to describe and demonstrate the group dynamics of an underground stratum. A shared interest in philosophy and thinking about political and economic issues forms the basis. The group documents its activity by filming and writing on various digital platforms.

The publication, which with its direct, documentary style and fold-out picture pages, stands out in the Angle series, showing stills from a milieu which on the whole is hidden from the public. In that sense it pays tribute to a popular grass-roots-based resistance. From the picture of Princess Leia from the Rebel Alliance in Star Wars alongside the tagged battle cry “Fuck this imperialist bullshit” (held up on a mobile screen) to a man whose cap bears the inscription “Who, what, why?”, the slogans are explicit and the form of the critique is steeped in the popular culture of the day. At the same time the warmth of the engagement and a tenderness towards the people involved are manifested in Winterling’s documen¬tation. These are conversational photographs with a point, which cultivate small, internal traces of counterculture and collective initiative.
