Publisher Note
The images in this second photobook, published in pocket format, have been chosen –after a long process– by the photographer himself. It is certainly an anthological review, almost a visual autobiography that includes a prologue by Keila Vall de la Ville, author of the novel Los Días Animals (OT Editores 2016), the poetry book Viaje Legado (bid & co 2016) and the storybook Ana no duerme (Monte Ávila Editores Latinoamericana 2008; Sudaquia Editores, 2016).
Diana Vilera, director of La Cueva, explains the importance of continuing the publishing house's catalog with Sánchez: “with this second publication, La Cueva strengthens its commitment to disseminate the portfolios of those photographers like Antolín Sánchez who are a national reference of a life dedicated to to generate an outstanding photographic work that must be consulted in the history of Venezuelan photography ”.
On the other hand, Sánchez himself, in an interview with Alejandro Sebastiani Verlezza, explains the story behind Tarot Caracas, one of the series that make up this photobook: “During 1979 I was still studying mathematics and wanted to start a series on Caracas . The question: how many images do you need to describe this tormented city? 50 or 500? I didn't even know how to start the job: through areas of the city, guided by chance? In those days I read about the Tarot and it seemed interesting to me to make a reading of the city based on the 78 arcana of it, which I started in 1980. This process took me eight years of continuous adjustments and revisions. A demanding factor in the formal aspect was working with a very vertical format, almost two to one. Regarding the content, it had to reconcile three factors: the meaning of arcano, the reality of Caracas and the vision that I had of it ”.
