Publisher Note
Anna Nordquist Andersson has for many years been interested in the photographic gaze and its gender-coding. In seemingly simple yet intricate image studies, she deconstructs prejudices regarding the male gaze.Exploring the analogue photographic process, Nordquist Andersson sheds a light on an in-between space, filled with both darkness and possibilities. It is in the black chamber of the camera that the film roll is exposed, and thanks to the film countless copies can be developed and circulated. Aside from looking back on the very principle of photography, she also focuses on a specific aspect of the cultural and social history of the medium. In the appropriated ads, famous camera manufacturers advertise new and improved models. The linguistic and visual approach reflects the stereotypical gender roles that the camera industry contributed to – but also how extremely gender-coded the advanced photography was at the time in being so directed towards the male consumer.
