Publisher Note

This catalogue by Roman Kurzmeyer is published on the occasion of the exhibition “Boden und Wand / Wand und Fenster / Zeit” (Floor and Wall / Wall and Window / Time) at the Helmhaus Zurich and deals with painting in the extended field. The exhibition illustrates this with an exemplary selection of works by seven internationally engaged contemporary artists.
With room-sized installations, paintings, videos and objects, the invited artists Polly Apfelbaum, Katharina Grosse, Bruno Jakob, Adrian Schiess, Christine Streuli, Niele Toroni and Duane Zaloudek make use of the possibilities of intermedia art, but at the same time see their work as a contribution to painting.
The present publication describes the aesthetic experience with these works, which are presented in the exhibition in spatially interlocked form, and discusses questions of an unbounded, transmedial painting. The richly illustrated text presents a cosmos of painting in its own way and allows the exhibition to unfold in front of the inner eye. In addition to the numerous reference illustrations for the individual positions discussed in the text, the publication contains an insert by each of the artists represented in the exhibition.
