Publisher Note

In Ce qu’il se passe (What is happening) Mathieu Pernot turns his lens towards the Mória camp: designed to accommodate 2,000 migrants, it is occupied by more than 20,000 refugees in January 2020. The vast majority of them do not have access to the infrastructure inside the camp and are forced to settle in tents in the olive grove, renamed the "Jungle" of Moria... Mathieu Pernot organizes our view of this camp through a very structured progression, like that of an occupant of the camp: "the arrival", "what happens ", then "have to leave".

In 2020, photographer Mathieu Pernot traveled several times to the island of Lesbos.
Located in the Aegean Sea, a few kilometers from the Turkish coast, this island experienced a succession of crises in 2020 that make it a nodal point in our history and our consciousness. Place of the adventures and conquests of Ulysses and Achilles, this territory plunges into the heart of Greek mythology and European identity. Due to its geographical location, Lesbos has always been a place of passage for people wishing to reach Europe.
Since 2015, the Moria camp has served as an administrative registration center and a waiting area for tens of thousands of refugees from many countries at war (Afghans, Syrians, Congolese, Somalis, etc.), and is at the center of the European question on the reception of refugees and the right to asylum.

Qualified as hell on earth, the camp experienced, in January 2020, an unprecedented level of overcrowding and then was affected by the Covid epidemic. In September, it was completely destroyed by a fire started by the refugees revolted against their fate. This book recounts the magnitude of this new tragedy, combining the artist's photographs and images taken from videos sent by the refugees with whom he has established a relationship, and thus constitutes a unique document.
