Publisher Note
I left Japan on October 25, 1984 without knowing that this date would mark the beginning of a ninety-two day countdown which was going to culminate in a rupture, banal, but which I had experienced then as the moment most painful of my life. I held this trip responsible. Back in France, on January 28, 1985, I chose, by conjuration, to tell my suffering rather than my journey. In return, I asked my interlocutors, friends or chance encounters: “When did you suffer the most? This exchange would cease when I would have exhausted my own story by telling it, or put my pain in perspective in the face of that of others.
