Publisher Note
Christine Rebet is fascinated by illusion and deception. Drawing is at the heart of her artistic practice. Inspired by pre-cinema, she chose animation, a hybrid medium in which the repetition of drawing gives the illusion of movement, creating what she calls her "paper cinema". Favouring drawings for their manual, spontaneous nature, she produced hundreds and thousands of them in ink, assembling them frame by frame using the traditional techniques of early animation. Christine Rebet reinterprets personal and collective traumas, blending history and fiction in fantasy realms. The universal subjects of her films evoke a political reality, the destruction of the world and the subjugation of human beings, but also the idea of metamorphosis.
