Publisher Note

The catalogue accompanies the first international anthological exhibition dedicated to Franco Vaccari (Modena, 1936), protagonist of Italian conceptual art. Over two hundred images, together with nine videos, present Vaccari’s artistic itinerary.

The exhibition takes its cue from Radici, a series of black and white photographs inspired by neo-realist that have as their object the territory of the Po Valley, to move to Exhibitions in real time, where the performative element that characterizes the relationship between art and photography becomes increasingly fluid.

Anthological Collection includes a series of photographs selected by the artist himself from those taken between 1955 and 2007, in which the boundaries between visual arts, literature, photography and cinema often blur and in which echo, among others, Fellini and Zavattini, Diane Arbus and Lou Reed, Hermann Nitsch and Joseph Beuys. In the last unpublished works, Vaccari finally returns to his homeland, to a Via Emilia now transformed into a sort of large urban agglomeration and transfigured by lights, almost a local Los Angeles.

The volume, which proposes the different sections presented in the exhibition, includes the critical texts by Marco Franciolli, Maria Perosino, Italo Zannier and Andrea Tomasetig.Lugano, February-March 2008
