Publisher Note
Fotofobia, by Vitor Casemiro, brings together a selection of black-and-white negatives accumulated over a period of ten years. The photobook is based on a set of images marked by technical flaws, such as overexposure, underexposure and blurring — mostly film ends that were veiled when loaded into the camera, a section of the 35mm roll usually discarded during the development and enlargement process. Guided by the idea of error and accident, Casemiro explores the limits of the photographic medium and challenges conventional standards of quality and legibility. The images occupy an unstable zone, where forms and figures are not always clearly defined, suggesting a fragmented construction. Organised as a continuous flow, the book emphasises accumulation and repetition, creating relationships between the images that reinforce themes such as memory, perception and visual fatigue. Fotofobia is Vitor Casemiro’s fourth book and continues his exploration of photography and the narrative possibilities of the book format.
