In their project "Shops with History – Sundry Goods in Vienna", Martin Frey and Philipp Graf have been photographing old business portals in Vienna since 2009. Each page of their online gallery www.geschaeftemitgeschichte.at contains 32 photographs; 24 of these will then be selected for printing in each volume of the photobook, which will be released in a small numbered and signed edition. A photograph commemorating a shop that no longer exists will be attached to the front cover of the book. The book will be printed digitally, each copy will feature hand-sewn binding and be wrapped in cellophane.
Volume 6 of our series of photo books once again brings together a number of shopfronts from businesses in a great variety of fields, such as a bookshop, picture frame shop, plumber, pub, flower shop, jeweller, dive bar, butcher, cafe, dry cleaner, tea shop, optician, hairstylist, sheet music shop, second-hand shop, kitchenware shop, fashion boutique and coal merchant.
The following businesses are among those which have since closed: Autobedarf Wilhelm Titz car supplies, Buchhandlung A. L. Hasbach bookshop, Installateur Ing. Eduard Prusa plumber, Blumenzauber – Sabine Cengiz-Klir flower shop, Wäscherei Putzerei Herbert Mertl dry cleaner, Optiker Otto Schleiffelder – Inh. Jörg Eder optician, Musikhaus Resonanz sheet music shop, Trödler Jakob second-hand dealer, Gasthaus Gruber – Josef Gruber pub, „La Rose“ Pullover Spezialgeschäft – Rozsi Szmuk boutique specialising in pullovers.
