Lauren Greenfield is considered to be one of America’s most acclaimed chroniclers of youth culture. Greenfield’s photographs are a revealing exploration into the daily lives and rituals of women. Her subjects range from the ordinary to the eccentric.
Girl Culture investigates girls’ relationships to their bodies and the ways in which they use body projects to establish their identities.
The photographs explore the relationship between girls’ inner lives and emotional development, and the material world and popular culture. They also reveal the exhibitionist nature of modern femininity through moments of vanity and performance in everyday life.
Lauren Greenfield combines a photojournalist’s sense of story with fine-art composition and color. Her photographs provide a window into the secret worlds of girls social lives and private rituals, the dressing room and locker room, as well as the iconic subcultures of the popular clique: cheerleaders, showgirls, strippers, debutantes, actresses, and models. The artist visits girls of all ages, discussing issues ranging from eating disorders and self-mutilation to spring break and prom.
With more than 100 photographs, 18 interviews with the subjects, and an introduction by social and cultural historian Joan Jacobs Brumberg.
