Hammer For Scale
Hammer For Scale is a visual anthology tracing discrete instances of a common field instrument as found in U.S. Geological Survey Web Archives. These images are made mostly by unidentified authors over the course of a century, and portray rock hammers photographed against varying features of the landscape. Decontextualized and placed into a particular sequence here, each image is presented with a denominative caption extracted from its accompanying summary.
This compilation tackles the peculiarities of a delineating vision, which borrows the formal qualities of an emblematic tool in configuring a standard placeholder to negotiate with nature. As these impressions echo one another with each turn of the page, what resonates is perhaps the ambivalence of the apparent withstanding the desire to inventorize the world.
