Publisher Note

Now reduced to just over eighty thousand persons, the Sami are a largely nomadic people, dedicated to reindeer herding, who have always moved freely in the immense Arctic landscapes today divided between four distinct countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia .

Valentina Tamborra reached them, portrayed them, interviewed them for four consecutive years, during as many trips, and built an unprecedented photographic and narrative reportage. They talked about their life and traditions, their resistance to a long process of forced integration, the daily problems linked to climate change that seems to know no end.

«I arrived beyond the Arctic Circle, in Finnmark, to listen to the story of those who have not had a voice for too long. Today I try to convey it through faces, words, images, and I don't know if I will be able to do it in the best way because talking about other people's stories is complex, one always feels somehow inadequate. There is something, however, that makes me feel like I can try: I come from a border myself, I learned early on what it means to be on the margins."
